Chapter 3 - Sign In/Sign Out

INTRODUCTION:

In order to assist a customer in the travel industry, you should have the knowledge to operate the Computer Reservation System (GDS), in your office.  Using City Pair Availability (CPA), you are able to assist your client with greater speed and thus provide a higher level of customer service.

Before using the Sabre System (GDS) an agent must first “sign-in” to the system.  The sign-in procedure identifies the agent who will be using the computer and the work area(s) in which they will be working.

OBJECTIVES:

The student will be able to:

ü                  Make the entry to sign-in and out of the computer in one area

ü                  Make the entry to sign-in and out of the computer in all six areas

ü                  Make the entry to redisplay sign-in message

ü                  Make the entry to display the current sign-in work area

ü                  Make the entry to change to different work areas

  Sign - In

Every individual authorized to use Sabre will be assigned an ID or employee number. The term “sign-in” is also referred to as “sine-in”.  It may be spelled either way and be correct.

Format:

SI<agent ID number>

Entry 3-1:

SI100

Response 3-1:

AGENT SIGN

CURRENT PASSCODE   ID  <000100>      SUF  <L5MA >

DUTY CODE          <.> AREA A>        NEW PASSCODE

After the words “Current Passcode”, the computer will expect your personal and private password.  Only the individual signing in knows the Passcode.  It verifies that only authorized persons are signing on to the system.

The next step is to enter the Passcode.  The Passcode consists of a combination of letters and numbers 6-8 characters in length. When one is assigned, the system administrator will go through, in detail, all types of possible combinations, as well as, combinations that are unacceptable.  When the Passcode is typed on the keyboard, nothing will show on the screen for security purposes.  It is important that the Passcode is entered properly.

The ID area reflects the agent ID or employee number.  The “SUF” reflects the city in which your computer resides or in the case of a travel agent, the “Pseudo City Code”, (PCC).  These two areas of the Sabre response must contain information or the sign-in will not be accepted.

The “Duty Code” is shown as a “.” and will be changed to a “*” after entering the Passcode.  The duty code represents the individual’s level of authority to access information in the computer.

The “Area” represents, by letter, in which of the six areas of Sabre the agent is currently working.  The areas are designated by alpha characters    A, B, C, D, E, and F.

Q:     What area are you currently working in?

A:     The area will vary by student

When the private Passcode is entered, Sabre responds with your location (L5MA), duty code (6), agent sign (ASI), and Sabre area currently working in, followed by a sign-in message.  If the agent signing in to Sabre is an airline employee, the location would be either a city or airport code, (MCO), and the rest would be the same.  The sign-in message is a couple of lines highlighting important information or newsworthy items that are travel related.

Sign – In Message

You may encounter a client whose travel involves something to do with what was contained in the sign-in message.  Simply return to the sign-in message to reread the information.

Sign- Out

It is recommended for security reasons that the user signs out when leaving the computer.  Sabre will automatically sign-out any user that has been inactive for a designated number of minutes, which will be specified by a manager or supervisor.  An agent should sign-out every time the computer would be left unattended to avoid any misuse.
